The Opportunity

The Senior Development Associate of Northern California will play a key role in executing CEO’s California regional fund development strategy through developing and implementing efforts to grow foundation and government support, along with conducting prospect research, writing grant proposals/reports/other deliverables, and collaborating closely with program staff on outreach and engagement strategies.

The Senior Development Associate of Northern California will support a regional team of Regional Development Associates by co-leading training opportunities (with the Manager, Regional Development) along with providing guidance and coaching, contributing to the overall direction and strength of the regional development team. They will also serve as the regional team lead for complex revenue opportunities such as government grants and potential mid-level donors.

The Senior Development Associate of Northern California will be highly organized and motivated to help attract, develop, and retain resources to sustain and grow the organization. They will adopt CEO’s results-driven culture to manage a range of deadline-driven projects and promote our work and achievements to attract diverse funding opportunities. They will be adept at partnering with entry- to senior-level staff on high-stakes projects and enthusiastic about building support for reentry and workforce development across a wide range of audiences.

Who We Are

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people recently released from incarceration. Across the United States, 8,000-9,000 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.

What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 30,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996.

Who You Are

  • You have 3+ years of related work experience, including at least 3 year’s experience in nonprofit grant writing/fund development with a proven track record of success. Experience with federal and California government opportunities is a plus.
  • You have prior project management experience ​​collaborating with geographically dispersed and diverse teams; demonstrated ability to collaborate across all levels and functions
  • You have fluency in the use of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace
  • You have proficiency or experience using data and/or donor management platforms such as Salesforce
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to compellingly engage with diverse audiences
  • You have the ability to work autonomously to produce materials on deadline, while often managing multiple concurrent deadlines
  • You have meticulous attention to detail and the ability to prioritize work in a fast paced environment
  • You have the willingness to learn, ability to adapt, and agility to quickly shift priorities to meet the changing needs of our work

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Key responsibilities of the Sr. Regional Development Associate include but are not limited to:

Strategy and Planning Support

  • Works closely with the Manager, Regional Development and regional program leadership to develop and execute strategies for increased revenue at the site/regional level
  • Ensure proper cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of existing funders as well as prospects
  • Coordinates meetings with key program staff to advance specific fund development efforts
  • Provides research and analytic support for funding or program ideas, as directed

Direct Fundraising Activities

  • Researches funding prospects with alignment to CEO’s mission and impact
  • Drafts, assembles, and submits responses to government, corporate, and foundation requests for proposals (RFPs)
  • Coordinates the assembly and submission of impactful and tailored grant reports for designated grants and individual donors
  • Prepares strategy/research memos and drafts outreach/follow-up correspondence to funders
  • Coordinates site visits from current and potential funders
  • Makes presentations and attends/summarizes meetings as assigned
  • Ensures on-time delivery of high-quality proposals and reports by thoroughly planning, delegating, and adhering to timelines and requirements for proposal development and submission
  • Tracks all fund development campaign-related activities using Salesforce

Team Management and Support

  • Attends monthly calls, gameplans, and prep meetings with Associates as needed
  • Reviews monthly institutional giving call agendas to ensure thoroughness and accuracy
  • Works with Regional Development Associates to ensure that data is accurate and funder acknowledgements are completed in a timely manner
  • Assists in the training and development of current and new Regional Development Associates

Compensation and Benefits  

The salary range for this position is $69,400-77,000/annually. CEO's compensation philosophy considers a variety of factors including experience, internal equity, and the labor market associated with the city in which the position is located. The labor markets associated with the cities in which CEO is based are variable, and the salary range included here reflects this. Our salary offer will fall within this range and will be reflective of the labor market of the city in which the position is based, as well the other factors named above.
